Tracks in the Snow

The simple, soft and sweet shawl that looks like tracks in the snow.

Designed with Christmas in mind for a special someone that I have in a grab bag, the Tracks in the Snow shawl is a new favorite of mine.  Following in the footsteps of the Cozy Cabin Shawl, this pattern used Hygge from RedHeart Yarns.  It also uses the same increases to form the triangular shawl shape.  However, where it differs from its older sibling, is the wider garter ridges and the addition of a cable.

Tracks in the Snow Triangular Shawl Knitting Pattern

They’re calling for a colder, snowier winter, which is great news for us knitters! It’s the perfect knitting weather, but also sets us up for a great gifting season.  Whether you plan to gift this or knit it for yourself, this pattern works up quickly and should be attainable for any intermediate knitter.  I’ve tried to make the pattern as beginner friendly as possible as well.

Tools Needed to Knit Tracks in the Snow:

Yarn: Hygge – 3 skeins

Needles:

To Knit: US Size 10 circular needle (it’s worked back and forth so yes, a straight needle would work, but it would get very heavy). For this shawl I tried a 60 inch needle and while the added room was nice, it required a lot more shifting while knitting.

To Cable: Either a size 10 cable needle or DPN.  I find DPNs work great and are smoother to work with when knitting a cable.

To Finish: Darning Needle to sew in your yarn tails.

Gauge: 14 STS X 22 Rows = 4 Inch Swatch

    Nice pattern.
I note that there are numerous instances of a typo in this pattern; STA in place of STS. No need to keep this reply.

your C3F – just want to clarify –put 3 sts on cable ndl held in front , K 3 sts , then K 3 sts on cable ndl – is that correct.??
It looks so soft – want to do it correctly. thanks
Just noticed STA – in several places – believe is typo for STS. Am I correct on this.? in set up Row 11, Tall cable – Rows 1,3,5 etc

yes, slide the next three stitches onto your cable needle, hold them in front and knit the following three stitches from the left hand needle. Then knit the three from the cable needle. πŸ™‚

Hi, I,m only on row 2 of the set up round but am a little confused. After row 1there are 10 stitches but row 2 reads as if there are12 sritiches. The 2 p stitches seem to be extra. What am I missing? row 3 looks like it’s based off of 10 stitches again? Is that right?

    Thanks for your help

Angie, I’ll knit through the beginning of the shawl and get back to you shortly. Thank you for contacting me, for knitting my project and for your patience.

That was a great catch. I’ve updated the post – the first row should be knit 4 not knit 6. And the second row should be purl 4 not purl 6. The other rows look like the correct stitch count. Thank you for catching this!

Hello, I donΒ΄t understand the first row. After cast on I have 10 stitches. But the row 1 I only have 8 stitches. When appear PM I must work a stitch?

    IΒ΄m looking forward your anwers

Hi Gloria – let’s see if we can work through this together. You should have cast on 3 stitches to start the shawl. You’ll knit these back and forth a number of times. Starting with the 3 stitches, you’ll pick up four stitches and knit them, so you have 7. Then you turn the work again, and pick up 3 more stitches across the bottom or cast on edge. You should have 10 on your needles before working the first row.

In Row 1, PM stands for Place Marker, and does not count as a stitch.
