Knitting Mock Three

Whip Up with WIP in No Time. The Mock Three is my third attempt at a mock cable beanie. The second design flopped but this design flies off of your needles. The Mock Three hat pattern uses super bulky yarn and faux cables to create a stunning hat that will look great on anyone.

Faux Cables

Sometimes you want the look of cables but not all of the hassle that comes with them. To knit the Mock Three hat pattern, you only need your basic circular knitting needle. No cable needles or double pointed needles are required for this hat. And you get not one but two different faux cables.

Using slipped stitches that are then passed over, and right twists this hat gives all of the texture and beauty of a cable knit hat. The passed over stitches create the look of the elongated stitches that sometimes result from knitting cables. These plus the right twists give a directionality to your stitches that result in a mock cable hat.

What You Need to Knit the Mock Three

Grab your US size 10 or 6mm circular needle. 16 inches should do the trick. This pattern also cals for super bulky yarn.

I used Lion Brands Re-Spun in Thick and Quick. Don’t look at the label of your yarn too much. They’ll generally recommend a larger size knitting needle. The result will be a different gauge entirely, and a hat that isn’t quite as warm.

You’ll want a stitch marker to denote the beginning of your next round. And a tapestry needle is always handy for weaving in your yarn tails. Personally I think a bulky or large sized pompom looks great on top of these hats.

Pattern Notations

If you are new to slipped stitches and passing stitches over top of each other, don’t fret. The pattern notes will explain everything you need to know in order to knit this beanie. The instructions call for a Yarn Over increase but if you prefer a simple Make One or Lifted Increase you can easily substitute them into the pattern.
