23 Inch Porch Goose Sweater

Okay, the obsession has hit a new level. Last month I knitted my 23 inch porch goose sweater and I can’t wait to start designing one for the 17 inch porch goose. This spring was a bit chilly. Initially I started sewing dresses for the gals, but then the temps dropped and suddenly they looked cold. That sent me spiraling until I came up with this sweater.

At the time I was also painting my front door and planters the perfect yellow. When I opened up my yarn stash, there it was, this adorable flocked yellow yarn. It was meant to be!

Yarn:

The yarn I used is Loops and Threads and is available at Michaels. You’ll need less than one skein for this sweater. It’s technically a worsted weight yarn, and very similar to Caron Simply Soft Yarns. You could use any worsted weight yarn. I went for a more acrylic yarn since this will be outdoors and in the sunshine.

Needles:

The neck of the goose is eight inches around. To start the sweater you will want either a set of double pointed needles, two short circulars, or a longer circular that can be used for magic loop. Whatever you pick, use a US Size 5! The body of the goose is 26 inches around at it’s widest. You’ll want a circular needle that can accommodate the increase in stitches. For the neck I used double pointed needles, then switched to an 16 inch circular, and then as the stitches increased, bumped up to about a 32 inch needle.

The Pattern:

If you’re new here, I try to write out my patterns as much as possible. My goal is to make them super easy to read. For this pattern, it’s ideal to know how to knit and purl. If you are comfortable with Make One Right and Make One Left, great! If not, I include instructions. Also, I try to keep cable instructions as simple as possible. Right and Left confuse me, so I try to provide instructions for holding stitches at the front or the back of your project.
