Woodland Themed Nursery

How We Pulled Together Our Nursery for Our Baby Girl

Emboldened by the first mural that I did in my son’s room, I started planning the nursery for our new baby girl. At the time I was still pregnant – so I as nesting hard. With our first baby we were all about being gender neutral. Knowing that we were having a girl, the pinks began calling to me like the creepy siren in Frozen 2. I decided to blend the pinks with a woodland themed nursery for my dream baby’s room.

Paint

Pink:

The color we chose is called Nautilus (like the seashell). You can grab it at Benjamin Moore. It’s a nice blend between orange and pink which keeps the room from being too pink. Once it’s on the walls, it looks like a nice light apricot color. We put this on three walls and saved one for an accent wall. This fourth wall we painted our go to, Simply White so that I could come back and paint a mural on it.

Woodland Mural:

I did some searching for mural inspiration. On Pinterest, I found a decal of beautiful trees. However, said mural cost way more than I was prepared to spend on said nursery after just building a house. I started sketching based off off some of the ideas in this mural and came up with something that I felt that I could execute with wall paint. If you checked out my last mural blog, you’ll remember that Benjamin Moore offers affordable paint samples!

I grabbed two greens, browns, and grays. My mural planned for two different types of trees and the different colors would help me execute that. I ended up adding in a bit of gold that I have on hand from painting our mirrors. To reduce a bit of my nerves that always come with a blank canvas, I started sketching the basic shapes of the trees. To paint the trees, I used a pack of different sized brushes that I have from Joann Fabrics. This especially helped with the leaves which were varying shapes and sizes of tear drops. It took about two coats to get the coverage I needed with everything. Then I added a third coat of some detail with a contrasting color for depth.

Other Touches:

While I wanted to achieve a woodland theme nursery, I didn’t want to make it too much on the nose. So I moved my old yarn storage dresser which is an antique dress in a warm rich color of wood up to her room. The crib and glider are hand me downs from my nieces, and was painted a nice neutral grey for my son.

Curtains:

We chose soft white gauzy curtains that were actually clearance at Home Goods. Hers is a double window and I don’t drawing the drapes much. Instead we got a black out shade cut to size and added these curtain panels for decoration. On the curtain rod, also from Home Goods, I added some more touches of green with faux greenery and some fairy lights.

Soft details to add texture in a girl's woodland themed nursery

Ikea:

I’ve been fighting bringing too much from Ikea into this home as I really love antiques and statement pieces, but darn-it they have some nice stuff. We found a sweet and soft white light fixture that illuminates the room in a soft light. And while still in our old house my husband found some hooks in the as is section. We added one to their bathroom to give them kid height towel hooks and one here in her room. I also reused a three tiered shelf as a diaper and breastfeeding caddy. I’m not huge on changing tables because in small rooms, they take up so much space! We plopped the pad on the floor and its great because I can involve her older brother in changes and empower him!

Painted gold mirror in our baby girl's woodland themed nursery

Mirror:

We took an old, plain oval mirror from her paternal great grandmother’s house and spruced it up with a coat of gold paint. It looked like someone else had started painting the mirror so we just finished the job. It’s so sweet and I love it.
