Velvet Scrunchies

Soft and subtle pops for the holidays

On the heels of the first Simple Scrunchies pattern released, these little gems were so much fun to make.  In case you didn’t catch the backstory on instagram or the last post, I got the chance to see my nieces Christmas Wish List.

On the list were velvet scrunchies.  I’m sure she saw these in the mall or on amazon, but I knew that I could make them…that and I have boatloads of velvet yarn…because when I saw it, I freaked out a bit.  I will admit.

If you can crochet, these are super easy.  Fun fact, I really can only crochet in the round.  Every time I’ve tried to make a scarf or a blanket it doesn’t end well.  And my grandma was a champ when it came to crocheting.  We still have her baby blankets.  She tried to teach me before she passed but I was just too young to sit still.  Oh if I’d have only learned.

Newly Added: Knitted Velvet Scrunchies

Same great look. Just as useful. Now using the skills that you’ve learned in knitting. The simple and subtle texture of these scrunchies is beautiful. They’re fast and easy to make.

Simple:

Cast on 60 stitches. Join in the round and knit for either four or six inches.

Break yarn and using the same yarn, sew the edges of the fabric together. Weave in the ends and you’re good to go!

Super Scrunched:

Cast on 75 stitches. Join in the round and knit for either four or six inches.

Follow the finishing instructions for the simple version and you’ll be ready to rock these scrunchies.

Here is how I worked up the Crocheted Velvet Scrunchies.

Start with US Size I or 5.5 mm crochet hook and bulky yarn.  I used Bernat’s Velvet from Yarnspirations.  If you’re in the US you can grab it at Joanns or Michaels.

Also, you’ll need an elastic hair tie.  I find that the regular size are better than the super thin ones.

Start by Chaining 3.

Place your chain behind your hair tie, and bring the bottom through the center.  Now match it up with the top of the chain and Single Crochet the together.

Double Crochet around the whole hair tie, as many times as you possibly can.  Keep scrunching the stitches together, and adding more.  If you hold your yarn tail in line with the hair tie, you can actually work it into the center and not have to sew it in later.  (Just don’t hold onto tightly when scrunching your stitches together).

Next Round, Chain three to start.  Then work 2 double crochets into every stitch for volume.  If mine is too scrunchy for your taste, you can work one double crochet, and then in the next stitch work 2.
