About the Evelyn Hat

In getting ready to move, I’ve been trying to knit through a bit of my yarn stash. I’ve had these gorgeous chunky yarns just sitting there, begging me to do something with them. The answer took shape in the form of an elegant knit hat. The Evelyn uses a simple sing cable stitch to work a spiral shape around the hat. The hat can be customized to fit your needs or wants in terms of fit and design. The pattern uses a five stitch repeat.

What You Need:

Yarn: A lovely chunky yarn.

Needles: US Size nine circular needles or Double Pointed needles.

As you are only cabling a single stitch, you can create this hat without a cable needle. However, if you feel more comfortable with a cable needle, use a US size nine or DPN.

Tapestry Need to weave in the yarn tails.

Knit the Evelyn Hat:

For adult sizing, cast on 70 stitches for a small hat, 74 for a medium, and 80 stitches for a large hat. I prefer the long tail cast on method. Place a stitch marker.

For newborns, cast on 40 stitches. Knitting for toddlers? Cast on 54

To knit the brim, knit one stitch through the back, and then purl the next (KTBL, P1). Work this for about nine or ten rounds.

Abbreviations:

P = Purl
C1FP = Cable one stitch to the front. Purl 1. Knit the stitch from the cable.
P2Tog = Purl two stitches together.

Set Up Round: *C1FP, P3* Repeat till the last 5 stitches. C1FP, P1, P2Tog. The hat pattern works by “borrowing” a stitch from the next section. This moves the cable around the hat. So you’ll need to decrease one stitch.

*For medium adult, and toddler sized hats, with even cast on stitch numbers, you can skip the Purl Two Together. I’ve been able to adjust the stitch count to work out evenly here.

Round 2: P1, *C1FP, P3* Repeat till the last 3 stitches. C1FP, P1
Round 3: P2, *C1FP, P3* Repeat till the last 2 stitches. C1FP
Round 4: P3, *C1FP, P3* Repeat till the last stitch. Cable this stitch forward. Remove stitch marker and Purl the first stitch from the next round. Knit the stitch you’ve held at the front. Replace stitch marker.
Round 5:

If you are knitting this for yourself. Work the pattern until you can place the hat on your head and scrunch it together at the top. If you are working on this for someone else, between 8 and 9 inches should be tall enough.

Decreases:

For the next three rounds, P2Together into each of the next two stitches all the way around the hat. You’ll have one stitch left over at the end of every round. Either purl this stitch as normal, or purl the last three stitches together.
