Coaster Knitting Patterns

Simple Knitting Patterns for the Home

Quick projects that add a bit of flair to your favorite table, knitted coasters make great gifts, or serve as the perfect accent for the knitters home.  They are also a fun way to learn or practice different stitches, and tension. Coasters are great because they are an easy way to protect your furniture, keep the sweat from cold drinks off of your table, and they are just a fun little functional frill for your home.

I’ve featured two easy to knit patterns in this post.  Knit five or six of one, or whip up a mix, tie them with a ribbon and these little hand knitted coasters make a great hostess or housewarming gift for friends, family and neighbors.  Cotton yarn is easy to work with and comes in a variety of colors, making them easy to customize per your intended recipient.

Basketweave knitting pattern on knitting in the parkPattern 1: Basket Weave

The basket weave pattern is an easy but pretty little stitch that is beautiful to look at.  It’s a simple mix of knits and purls in a repeating pattern.  Follow the directions below for an easy to work pattern.

Cast on 20 Stitches using your favorite method.  (I prefer the long tail cast on).

Rows 1-6: Slip 1 knit-wise, K4, P5, K5, P5

Row 7: P5, K5, P5, K5

Rows 8-12: Slip 1 Purl-wise, P4, K5, P5, K5

Rows 13-18: Slip 1 knit-wise, K4, P5, K5, P5

Row 19: P5, K5, P5, K5

Rows 20-14: Slip 1 Purlwise, P4, K5, P5, K5

Bind off using your preferred method, and use a darning needle to weave in the ends.  If you’d like to take this pattern a step further, you can add a stockinette stitch backing to this piece by casting on an additional 20 stitches and alternating knit and purl rows for a total of 6 rows.  Sew the two pieces together.

Pattern 2: Diagonal Knit Coasters

This pattern is very similar to the coaster pattern that I’ve featured on the blog before, just a bit smaller making this a fun and fast project to whip up.  Grab your favorite color of cotton dishie yarn and get clackin’.
