Basketweave Blanket

Simple skills create beautiful elements in this quick baby blanket pattern

Baby blankets are so much fun to knit! With the fun basketweave texture, this blanket is no different! To knit the Basketweave Blanket pattern, the only skills you’ll be required to use are: Casting on and binding off, Knit stitches and purl stitches!

This blanket is warm, but stretchy. It makes a great gift as it’s perfect for wrapping a baby up on a chilly day, spreading it out for some tummy time, or tucking him or her into a carseat.

I originally knit this pattern way back in 2016. That was way before I had designs of creating a baby of my own. Who knew in just four short years I’d be here, publishing the pattern again, but in a whole different world!

Included below are two different patterns: one version features a simple garter stitch border and the other offers a seed stitch version.

What You’ll Need to Knit the Basketweave Blanket Pattern:

Yarn: 5 or 6 skeins of Premier Yarns, Anti Pilling Worsted Weight Yarn in your choice of color.  Magenta pictured here.

Care Instructions: Machine Washable (Gentle Cycle is recommended), Tumble or air dry.  Do not Iron or dry clean.

Needles: US Size Six or 4mm circular needle in your choice of length.  This needle size gives it a tighter weave, making it warmer.  Typically yarns recommend a larger needle like a size nine but the choice is up to you.

Basketweave Baby Blanket Pattern:

Getting Started:

Cast On 200 Stitches – In this pattern I used a long tail cast on for a stretchy border.

In this pattern You’ll Knit the Knits and Purl the Purls, so that the bumps for the purls alternate, giving it that basket weave look.  Sections are knitted in six row segments, alternating so that knit sections are stacked on top of purled sections.

This pattern will lie flat, but for aesthetics you may choose to add a border – either knitted during the creation of the blanket or crocheted on after the blanket is completed. You can find these suggestions at the end of the pattern.

Border:

Rows 1-10: Slip 1 knit-wise, Knit to end of the row.

Begin Blanket Pattern:

Section 1:

Row 1: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *K5, P5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 2: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *P5, K5* Repeat until last five stitches K5

Row 3: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *K5, P5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 4: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *P5, K5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 5: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *K5, P5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 6: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *P5, K5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Section 2:

Row 7: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *P5, K5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 8: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *K5, P5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 9: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *P5, K5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 10: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *K5, P5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 11: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *P5, K5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Row 12: Slip 1 Knit Wise, K4, *K5, P5* Repeat until last five stitches, K5

Repeat these two sections until the blanket reaches the desired length.  Some prefer to make baby blankets square and others rectangle. The size and shape really depend on your preferences…or that of the intended blanket recipient.
