The Blanket Blahs

Do you ever get the blanket blahs while knitting?

You’ve Heard of Sleeve Island…But Now I’ve Got the Blanket Blahs

If you’ve have ever knitted a sweater, you are probably familiar with the term “sleeve island”…but even if you aren’t, I think you’ll get the blanket blahs concept pretty quickly. Sleeve island is when you knit the first sleeve of a sweater, and then you have to go back and do it all over again for the second sleeve. Not wanting to redo what you’ve already done, you tend to put the sweater in time out until you’re ready to pick it back up again.

What are they?

The blanket blahs are hitting me hard right now. This is when you are about a third, to halfway into knitting a blanket. By now the newness of the project has worn off. Now you feel like you’re stuck on repeat. You’re also not far enough into the blanket to have the end in sight. Trudging along is a pretty accurate description.

My Current WIP

Currently I’m working on a baby blanket. A dear friend of ours is becoming a grandma and I want to make them something sweet to celebrate this new baby girl. I started a new pattern and have begun drafting it up. It’s based on the ridgeline blanket, just a bit smaller, and instead of ridges, there are rows of bobbles.

I’m know I’m not doing a great job of selling this pattern when I’m saying I’m getting bored in the middle but I think we all feel this a bit regardless of the blanket we’re knitting right?

Why Do the Blanket Blahs Hit Me?

I am not a process knitter. And finishing a project gives me energy to dive into the next project. That means it takes me a bit longer to finish these larger projects sometimes because the excitement waxes and wanes. If I’m honest, I think I’m also being affected by covid ramping back up and things threatening to shut down again. The CDC literally updated their mask suggestions the night before my birthday – happy birthday to me right?

Maybe to help cheer people up, I’m thinking about offering this pattern for free. Maybe just when it launches, but we’ll see. If it’s a real pick me up, then I might just keep it free.
