Test Knitting the Ferryman

A Cabled Hat Great for The Guys in Your Life

Recently I started working on a few knitted hat patterns for the guys in my life and we are test knitting the Ferryman Knit Hat Pattern!

This had is a new favorite of mine.  My dad, husband and brothers have been asking for hats, but aren’t a fan of the traditional cables that I have been using in my patterns, feeling that those are a bit feminine for them.

Initially I was left scratching my head a bit on this one, but then after thinking and looking around for some inspiration, I was able to come up with this pattern.

Currently we are test knitting the Ferryman Knit hat

This hat uses a not quite as popular cable, that looks a bit like a chevron, to create eye-catching detail and texture.

The Ferryman Knit Hat

Previously I had worked on a similar hat, the chevrons hat for my then fiance (now husband).  He loved it, the way it felt and the way it fit.  So for this hat, I added another version of the cable.   This one is much smaller or shorter, to create a bit of added detail that travels up the hat.  Now I’m test knitting the Ferryman hat pattern to work out any kinks and make it available for purchase!

Both of these hats use a thicker, worsted weight yarn which makes them warmer than some of the other hats that I’ve made in the past.  I found out this is important as the men in my life want function over style, though they do like to look good while wearing the hats.

I’ve started using BigTwist Premium yarns as they’re affordable and acrylic – meaning they can be washed.  My husband will wear the crap out of his hat and by then it’s in need of a bit of love…and by love, I mean a quick spin in the washing machine.  While the label says it’s able to go in the dryer, I still air dry these hats, either hanging them in my laundry room by a clothespin or laying them flat on blocking mats.

Currently an awesome group of women are test knitting the Ferryman’s Knit Hat, and I cannot wait to show you their results – oh, and publish the pattern! Stay tuned for this, and a third hat using a variation of these cables!

A huge thank you to these volunteers for test knitting the Ferryman’s hat.  If you are interested in test knitting be sure to sign up to follow the blog – so you won’t miss your change to test the next pattern (meaning get it for free.)
