Esme Ear Warmer

The Esme Ear Warmer is a fun and functional winter accessory

The Esme Ear Warmer is my take on a turban style ear warmer that uses knitting in the round to create an intricate yet simple knitting pattern.

Recently the braided cable has been calling my name. I’ve used it in two recent hat patterns and now in this ear warmer. Originally I saw something similar when browsing for Christmas presents, and knew that I had to make one for myself.

Intricate yet simple – what does that mean?

The only real stitch that you need to know to make the Esme Ear Warmer is the knit stitch. To knit this pattern, you’ll simply knit in the round for a time, then divide the stitches into three sections and knit those individually in the round for a time.

However, there are other skills like the cast on and grafting that are required for this pattern. The entire pattern is worked in the round, just in various sections.

We’ll get into this a bit more in the next section of this post.

What do you need to Knit the Esme Ear Warmer?

You’ll want to pick a yarn that is both soft and warm. Since this will be against your ears and the side of your face softness is key. As this ear warmer will not cover the top of your head, you’ll want the yarn to be warm as well. The yarn weight for this pattern is a medium or worsted weight yarn in the color of your choosing. You’ll only need one skein.

I chose Premier Anti-pilling Solids.

This is where the trickiness of the pattern might come in. The needle size for this ear warmer is a US Size 3 or 3.25mm circular needle. I recommend you have two circular needles for the finishing or grafting of the stitches together.

You’ll also need double pointed needles in the same size to knit the three strands that form the braid at the center of this pattern. I had a bunch on hand in order to determine the length of the strands. You should do just fine with three DPNs if you knit them one section at a time. You can place the stitches on your second circular needle or a stitch holder to preserve them as you work the other two sections.
