Woven Hat Knitting Pattern

Free Pattern Friday

Most woven stitches result in patterns that are either flat, or worked flat and then seamed.  This fun and funky hat is a way to work the woven stitch almost in the round – as in, it’s worked back and forth but with wrapping and turning rather than working it flat and stitching the two sides together.  Let me know if you have any questions at all!

Yarn: Any #4 or worsted weight yarn.  You could edit the pattern though if you wanted to use a chunkier yarn.   I chose Deborah Norville’s EVERYDAY yarn in: Aubergine which looks like a rich plum color

Needles: US Size 4 Circular Needles, Double Pointed Needles (DPNs) if you’d like, and a Darning Needle

Skills: K, P, KTB (Knit through the back), BO

Sizing – Small to Medium men and women.  For larger heads, additional STS may need to be added, and additional rows added during “decrease” portion of the pattern.  For help please email me: maggie@procraftinator.co

Woven Stitch Pattern:

It looks a bit tricky to start, but once you do a few rows you’ll be able to Knitflix and Chill while you work this hat. The woven Stitch is worked back and forth over an odd number of stitches.  You might want to practice on a swatch for a few rows until you feel confident with the pattern.  I’ll do my best here to demonstrate with pictures.

Begin Hat:

Size: Children’s Large/Women’s Small to Medium.

Note: This hat is, and is not worked in the round.  As you noticed working one of the options for the cowl, the pattern needs to be worked back and forth to achieve the woven look.  That would normally leave a bit seam up the back of the hat, like there was in the first option for the cowl. Here is the work around for seaming together the back of the hat as you knit.

Step 1: Knit row 1 of the woven stitch pattern.

Step 2: Slip the marker and first stitch of the next round purl wise.  Take the yarn from the back of the needle, bring it to the front.

Step 3: Slip the stitch and stitch marker back onto the left needle, turn the work around to purl the next row.

Step 4: Bring the yarn to the front and purl the first stitch.

You will have wrapped the yarn around the last stitch of the last row, working to pull together or stitch together the seam of the work.

Cast on 112 Stitches

For smaller heads, the pattern should be large enough to add another layer, for additional warmth, and can be scrunched in the back to make it like a beanie.

For Larger Heads cast on additional stitches in multiples of 10.

Rows 1 – 10: *Knit 1, Purl 1* till end of round

Row 11: Knit all stitches to set up the row, after the last stitch, Make one Left (Picking up the bar in between the last stitch and the first stitch of the next row and knitting it through the back. 113 STS.

Row 12: Work first row of woven stitch pattern: KTB of Second stitch, KTB of first stitch, Slide both off left needle.

Row 13: Follow the steps above to wrap the yarn around the last stitch of the last row.  Then work row 2 of the woven stitch pattern: Purl into second stitch, then purl into first stitch on the left needle, slide both off the needle.

Repeat these two rows until the work measures about 8 inches tall, ending on a purl row (row 2) of the pattern so that your next row to begin the decrease section is a knit row.

Note: If you’d like this to look like a scrunchie beanie you may want to add additional rows.  If you want it to fit like a knit cap, with no scrunch, you may want to knit for about 6 ½ inches.
