Tjust a Little Capelet

A sweet wool capelet inspired by the Tjust Islands in Sweden.

Inspired by my travels last year to Västervik, Sweden.  Tjust is a beautiful archipelago in Sweden, boasting wild swans, gorgeous ocean vistas and some of the nicest hosts you’ll find in the world. One evening we were hosted to a delicious dinner at the Winter Swan, a beautiful tiny pup on the island.  Outside we took a dip in the fire heated hot tub and sauna (and an icy dip in the ocean).

What’s in the TJust a Little Capelet Pattern:

This little capelet is sweet and a dream to knit. You first cast on and knit in the round for a series of inches to form the collar. Then the shoulders are formed, continuing to knit in the round and using simple increases. The body of the capelet is formed by working short rows that feature a simple cable.

I spotted some peruvian wool on sale one day on KnitPicks website and snagged a couple of skeins – having no idea what I was going to make with them.  They were just a really rich color that was beautiful. They were so pretty that I kept them in a wooden bowl in my office on display. The color fit this Swedish inspired project perfectly: Lingonberry Heather.

For those who aren’t familiar with lingonberries, they’re like the swedish equivalent of cranberries: a jellied berry served with meat.  When I came home I grabbed a jar and ate it on my toast and my Swedish colleagues had a good laugh. Imagine putting cranberry sauce on toast and having it for breakfast.  It was called a jam – how was I to know?

What you need to Knit the Just a Little Capelet

The yarn: Lingonberry Heather by KnitPicks.  Just over 3 skeins (250 yards per skein) Or similar fingering weight yarn

The Needles: US Size 3 circular needles, in a short size and long size. I used the short size (16 inches) for the initial cast on and collar part of the capelet and again for the short rows, and a longer size for the increases and shoulders.
