New Pattern Launch: Bjorn’s Hat

The knit-worthy people in your life are such a blessing. The one’s that love whatever you make, tell you not to sweat the mistakes, and wear your projects (even if they wear them wrong side out like my mom continues to do to this day…). Bjorn’s hat was inspired by one of these people in my life, two actually. My husband and son are definitely knit-worthy. They like a more non-traditional cable. They like something a bit more unique, dare I even say masculine? Bjorn’s Hat is designed for them.

My son wearing his Bjorn's Hat - he's 1/2 the inspiration for this knitting pattern.

Why the name Bjorn’s Hat? When we were pregnant with my daughter we got my son a doll. We name everything that comes into our house. The doll was no exception. It needed a name. I picked the doll based on my son’s physical characteristics. When pregnant with my son, I would badger my husband for names he liked. Being from Germany, he started looking at European names. Then it devolved into him jokingly suggesting names that might be a bit…too unique in the US. Bjorn was one of those names (along with Wout and some other ones…namely inspired by Belgian cyclists…). I’ve already directly names a hat after my son so I needed another name. Hence Bjorn, my son’s alter ego.

Who Can Knit Bjorn’s Hat?

I design my patterns to be attainable. My goal is to keep them available to as many knitters as possible. This means that newer artists can work my patterns. I’ve abbreviated cables in Bjorn’s Hat Pattern. However, I’ve written the full instructions in the pattern notes. If you’ve never worked a cable before, you should still be able to knit this pattern.

Bjorn's Hat Knitting Pattern makes the perfect apres ski hat.

What is Featured in the Pattern?

You’ll receive one digital pattern with sizing from newborn to adults. The pattern features all abbreviations and skills explained in the notes. It is written to be easy to understand and customized so have fun with this one.

The cables featured are antler cables. These cables shift slightly as you work the hat for a delicate yet sturdy design. The smaller cables also mean less gaps so a bonus feature of the hat is that it’s warm.

The pattern includes two different options for the brim. You can knit a simple brim, or you can knit a folded brim. This second option makes the hat a bit warmer and holds it’s shape a bit more.

The suggested yarn is acrylic meaning you can gently wash and dry the hat. I tend to hand wash my acrylic hats just in case. I pick this yarn because it’s soft not scratchy, easy to wash and care for, and affordable. This keeps the hat attainable for knitters but also makes it great to gift! And this close to Christmas you can whip up a few to give this year!

You need US Size five circular knitting needles or double pointed needles. The pompom is optional. My son loves them, my husband…does not.
