Cutting My Teeth on New Sewing Tools

Actually It Was My Finger, With the Rotary Cutting Tool, in the Basement.

Sounds like a bad game of Clue…but it’s true. In order to try to speed up the cutting of fabric, and to make it more even/accurate, I ordered new sewing tools.

Specifically in this round, I purchased a rotary cutting tool and self healing cutting mat. So far I really like them but I’ll get into the knitty gritty down below. Because, that’s what I’m here for right?

This is the set that I ordered off of Amazon. (Not an affiliate link BTW).

Thoughts on my New Sewing Tools

The set looks really nice. I was happy with the timely shipping and they were packed nicely so they weren’t damaged en route. Murphy usually tries to help me open packages, and I was happy that this wasn’t one that he got to.

The Rotary Cutting Tool

The rotary cutting tool definitely feels sturdy and not some cheap flimsy thing I ordered in a fit after two glasses of wine one night when my husband was working.

At first I was a bit intimidated by the tool. Its easy enough to figure out. It has a safety button to lock the tool, and keep the blade from hurting anyone or anything when not in use. And then there is another safety “trigger” that you have to squeeze to engage the circular blade as well.

The disks are super sharp. And they cut really well. At first I was hitting some snags and I learned that I was either not applying enough pressure, or the wheel was locked out/not spinning.

I also did get a little cocky and at one point ran it into my finger. I’m glad that this was a light stroke or else my finger would still be healing!

The Self Healing Cutting Mat

The cutting mat also is nice and seems like it will take the abuse rather nicely. It’s firm and solid. It also doesn’t seem to move around on you when you are working.

My only issue with the cutting mat is the size. And this is my fault because the size of the cutting mat is very prominently featured in the listing. I was a bit timid to commit to a bit mat before knowing whether I’d like this new set of sewing tools or not. So I guess I now have a more portable mat that I can also use with Exacto Knives for other crafting projects too.

I might ask Santa for a bigger sewing mat later this year.
