Trail Hiking Hat Knitting Pattern from Knitting in the Park

Originally launched back in June of 2018, the Trail Hiking Hat Pattern is a chunky braided hat kitting pattern. The pattern has received a lot of love. But there’s always room for improvement right? I’ve reknit the hat in a different yarn. Some of the purls have been removed and the shape of the crown has been made more gradual. This all makes the hat of beanie than a fitted hat.

The Trail Hiking Hat is an easy to follow knitting pattern that uses simple abbreviations rather than complex charts. The rounds repeat to form chunky cables that look beautiful while keeping the hat functional. The large cables make just about any yarn look lovely. This means you can pick just about any worsted weight yarn. The simplicity of the pattern also makes it customizable.

New Yarn for the Trail Hiking Hat:

Originally I recommended Big Twist Yarn for this hat. While I do still love this yarn (I’m currently knitting a new hat pattern with it), I’ve opted for the Painbox Yarns Acrylic yarn for the relaunch of this pattern.

The kids and small run about 1 skein of yarn (maybe two if you do a folded brim). The larger sizes you’ll need two skeins of your choice of color.

What You’ll need to knit this pattern:

Needles:

You’ll need one set of US Size 5 circular knitting needles for the brim. For the body of the hat, you’ll need one set of US Size 7 circular kitting needles. I recommend a US Size 7 DPN to knit the cables, but you can always use a cable knitting needle in a similar size if you have it handy.

Pompom:

This hat is designed to be knit with a pompom. I have loads of the faux fur pompoms that I made before Christmas on hand so that’s what I’ve gone with. If you prefer a yarn pompom, have at it!
