Easy Kids Art Project That You Can Be Proud to Hang
Children’s artwork is praiseworthy and displayable in your house. The project I am going to walk you through is a bit elevated and is something with a canvas and some acrylic paint. It’s a piece that I don’t mind putting a nail into my drywall for. This piece has staying power and will hang on your walls through the years. This is an easy kids art project that you can be proud to hang.
My kids are always asking me to paint. They absolutely go wild for paint. But paint is messy and it requires a lot of prep time. We are redoing our basement which means that I’ve lost my go to messy space. Concrete walls and flooring was a better option for splatters and spills.

The Backstory for this Easy Kids Art Project
I stopped into my friend’s business. It was great to catch up and chat about how we’ve grown and started families. Dots and Doodles is the perfect space to take your kids! They get to paint, and you get to walk away from the mess (sort of). The staff are the perfect guides for solo experiences and birthday parties! I grabbed two of her to go canvases for a fun outside project.
The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. First we grabbed an old lawn blanket, and then we got ready to paint. My kids had so much time, but at their young ages they were a bit more freeform with the projects. My inner artist was having a hard time not redirecting the or trying to fix their projects. So, I let them have their fun. And an idea hit me.
The Easy Art Project For Kids:
You’ll need:
- Canvas
- Acrylic Paint.
- A Few Brushes
- Paper Plates or a Palette.
Optional Items:
- Gesso.
- Palette Knife or Other Texture Tools.
- Smock or old T-Shirt to protect your kids clothing.
The hardest part of this project is honestly the dry time. We had an old canvas type print from Ikea that we aren’t hanging on the wall anymore so this is what we used. You can grab a canvas in just about any size from your local art store like Michaels
Canvas Prep
Using white acrylic we painted over the existing picture. If you have an actual plain canvas you might want to do this as well. The plain canvas is a bit matte without a shine and is pretty textured. I let my kids use the white acrylic paint to add a bit of texture as well. If you want a very textured canvas, I suggest using gesso first. You can find fun things around the house like seashells, forks, etc. to create textured areas.
Let this dry thoroughly.
Making the Painting!
Find a clean, dry brush. Pour a small amount of paint onto a plate or palette. Dip your brush into the paint. In this case, I used black. Then dab it a few times onto a clean spot of the plate. Then let your kiddos make a few bold brush strokes. Try using different parts of the canvas and play with positive and negative space.
